Cyber Security Club
The workshops will cover the following areas:
Cyber security, referred to as information technology security, focuses on protecting computers, networks, programs and data from unintended or unauthorized access, change or destruction.The ILIA cyber security class provides students with the basic concepts of Cyber Security, principles of cyber security, attackers and attacks, and security mechanisms for prevention, detection and recovery of data. In this class, the students will be familiarized with primary cyber security concepts and terms and the ethical use of cyber.
The world has changed and we all are dependent on internet in one way or another. Due to the growing volume and sophistication of cyber attacks, more attention is required to not only make aware our youth of these threats but also to let them know how to protect themselves from such threats or attacks. As the number of mobile users, digital applications and data networks increase, so do the opportunities for exploitation. After this class, the students will be in a better position to understand cyber threats and how to protect themselves form those threats and enjoy the cyber world in a more friendly and safe way.
With an Introduction to cyber security the course will discuss:
1. Principles of cyber security
2. Attackers and attacks
3. Security mechanisms for prevention, detection and recovery
1. Familiarity with primary cyber security concepts and terms
2. Appreciation for the need to secure information
3. Ethical use of cyber
1. Short seminars
2. Participation in interactive discussions
3. Performing hands-on laboratory exercises
4. Writing technical analysis

The class is composed of two saturday sessions on dates 02/08/2014 and 02/15/2014.
Dr. Mohamed Eltoweissy is a Professor affiliated with The Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech and The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Arizona. Eltoweissy served as Chief Scientist for Cyber Security Research at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, USA (2010-2012). Eltoweissy’s current research interests crosscut the areas of cyber resilience and security, cooperative autonomic systems, and networking architecture and protocols for large-scale ubiquitous cyber-physical systems, infrastructures and clouds. Eltoweissy has over 150 publications in archival journals, books and conference proceedings and a funding record exceeding $15M. Eltoweissy received his PhD in Computer Science from Old Dominion University, 1993 and MS and BS in Computer Engineering and Automatic Control from Alexandria University, Egypt, 1989 and 1986 respectively. Eltoweissy serves on the editorial board of IEEE Transactions on Computers (the flagship and oldest Transactions of the IEEE Computer Society), as well as other reputable journals. In addition, he is active in professional leadership activities and as an invited speaker at both the national and international level. Eltoweissy is a senior member of IEEE and a senior member of ACM. Eltoweissy received several professional and service awards and was nominated for the Virginia SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Awards, the highest honor for faculty.
Brian Mason (Yusuf) has over 20 years of Information Technology (IT) experience and has worked in many different areas of IT. Starting out as a Tape Librarian and Computer operator on the IBM 9377 and the AS400 Midrange computers. He has held many different positions including PC Technician, Novel Network Administrator, NT Administrator, Nortel Meridian 1 PBX Administrator, SQL Database Administrator, SharePoint Administrator, PeopleSoft Administrator and Application Security Analyst. He has also taught Critical Thinking to students in Baltimore City in collaboration with the Department of Education at Coppin State University. Brian has a Computer Science Degree from Coppin State University, he is also a Security+ certified professional and a Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI) with a concentration in IT.
