TFI Youth Leadership Retreat 2017

Muslim Youth Engagement: Building Civic Consciousness

This five-day retreat, held in the greater Washington DC area, is a wonderful opportunity for American Muslim college students who want to gain a better understanding of the space they occupy in the current political climate. In an era where the Muslim identity is politicized, it is absolutely vital to evaluate the approach to political and civic engagement, particularly among youth activists. In this retreat, participants will be exposed to the multidisciplinary approach in government and political involvement, which includes:
Understanding the History of Muslims in America; its origins, roots of Islamophobia, and how to maneuver as a Muslim youth in the current political climate
Awareness and grasp of issues based on various disciplines, such as media & communications, social justice, environmental and health sciences, and humanitarian work, as well as the intersectionality of these issues with American Muslims.
Familiarizing the college students with different Muslim organizations and community leaders in aforementioned fields
A tour of Washington DC, a site visit to the ADAMS Center (All Dulles Area Muslim Society), and a special Salatul Jumu’ah at the Diyanet Center of America in Maryland.

Candidates of this program must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in the US or Canada.
